Former NBA guard Malik Beasley has been indicted on federal gambling charges stemming from an alleged sports betting scheme involving point shaving and player prop bets, according to ESPN. Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, confirmed that the government is coordinating a voluntary surrender later this week.
Federal prosecutors allege Beasley manipulated his own on-court performances during multiple games while with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2023-24 season in an effort to influence betting outcomes. The indictment claims the scheme centered on individual player prop bets rather than game results and was designed to help pay off substantial gambling debts.
According to prosecutors, Beasley lost millions of dollars gambling during his nine-year NBA career despite earning nearly $60 million in salary. Authorities also allege he accepted bribes to intentionally alter his statistical production in specific games, allowing co-conspirators to profit from wagers placed on his individual performance.
The indictment names former NBA veteran Ed Davis, sports agent Paolo Zamorano, and several others as alleged participants in the operation. Prosecutors have filed charges that include sports bribery, wire fraud conspiracy, honest services fraud conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy. (ABC News)
The case marks one of the most significant gambling scandals to hit the NBA since legalized sports betting expanded across the United States. It also follows the lifetime ban of former NBA player Jontay Porter, further intensifying concerns about the integrity of player prop betting markets.
Beasley has not publicly commented on the allegations. As with all criminal cases, the indictment contains allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
